Qua Đèo Ngang (Bà Huyện Thanh Quan)

Qua Đèo Ngang

Bà Huyện Thanh Quan

Bước tới Đèo Ngang bóng xế tà

Cỏ cây chen đá, lá chen hoa.

Lom-khom dưới núi tiều vài chú

Lác-đác bên sông rợ mấy nhà.

Nhớ nước, đau lòng con cuốc cuốc

Thương nhà, mỏi miệng cái da da.

Dừng chân đứng lại: trời, non, nước

Một mảnh tình riêng, ta với ta.

Passing by the Ngang Pass

by the wife of a mandarin governing Thanh Quan district

Pausing my footsteps at the Ngang Pass when the sun has declined over

Where the grass is competing with the rocks, and the leaves the flowers.

At the mountain’s foot, there are some woodsmen who are bent walking

And beside the river, some houses on stilts are here and there, scattering.

Pondering upon motherland’s fate pains the country swamp hen’s heart

Crying the love for the family tires its bill on the home francolin’s part.

I am pausing, scanning the sky, the mountain, and the water so deeply

There is a portion of private sentiments, but only with me and for me.
