The Vietnam War (1954-1975) has been the topic of an incredibly voluminous literature for the past five decades. These documents have touched on all political, military, economic and social aspects of the war with the most important ones being the studies to reassess the cause, merit, and conduct of the war. American historians and researchers, including the political and military people who had been involved in the war, were trying to understand why America has lost the war in spite of its huge amount of efforts and money spent on it. For the first thirty years, a large majority of researchers have reached the conclusion that the United States have lost the war mainly because of the two following reasons:

  • The U.S. involvement was a mistake for various reasons, one of them was the wrong taking of side in the war: its ally, the Republic of Vietnam (RVN) did not deserve to be supported; its army (The Army of the Republic of Vietnam, or ARVN) was cowardly and totally lacked of fighting capability
  • The Vietnam War was “an unwinnable war”

This school of thought was dominant for a very long period of time, and, finally, has become the orthodox main stream within the American historian community and academia of the Vietnam War. During that period of time, the historians and researchers with the opposite point of view, such as Guenter Lewy with his America in Vietnam (1978) or Norman Podhoretz with his Why we were in Vietnam (1982), were a very small minority. Only recently, from the very last year of the 20th century, with Michael Lind with his Vietnam: the necessary war (1999), can we see more and more American researchers working on new re-assessment of the war and rejecting the orthodox main stream, and thus, having been called “revisionists.” The revisionist school of thought can be summarized as follows:

  • The U.S. involvement, within the context of the Cold War (between the Free World and the Communists) and the Domino theory (the collapse of South Vietnam would lead to the collapse of other Southeast Asian countries) was a sound decision, which should be absolutely taken by the U.S. as the leader of the Free World; the ARVN was courageous and has highly admired fighting capability; the RVN lost the war because it was betrayed and abandoned by the U.S., more specifically by a Democratic Congress that cut off all military aid to South Vietnam
  • The U.S. could have won the war, and probably with a much lower cost, if it had conducted the war with a better strategy

The readers will be able to obtain more information regarding the debate on the Vietnam War between the two orthodox and revisionist camps by reading the following article by Dr. Mark Moyar: “Vietnam: historians at war,” in the electronic journal Academic questions, vol. 21, no. 1 (Spring 2008), published by the National Association of Scholars, at this URL: https://www.nas.org/academic-questions/21/1/vietnam_historians_at_war

This Bibliography is just a modest effort to compile a list of really important documents with a relatively high level of reliability, published by university presses or famous and trustworthy trade publishers, such as Doubleday, McGraw-Hill, Prentice-Hall, Random House, St. Martin’s, Westview, etc., and widely cited in works about the Vietnam War by serious researchers. Because of the large size of the literature, and in order to facilitate the use of materials, the author has placed the documents in a number of topical arrangements, based on their contents. The readers will notice that some materials could fit into more than one topic. For published books, their entries will include, after the full bibliographic data (author’s name, title, place of publication, publisher’s name, and year of publication), the Call Number within the U.S. Library of Congress collection. In cases the items are not held at the U.S. Library of Congress (extremely rare cases), their entries will carry the Call Number assigned by either Cornell University Library (in Ithaca, New York) or Harvard University Library (in Cambridge, Massachusetts). For journal articles, their entries will include: author’s name, title of the article (in quotation marks), title of the journal (in italics), volume and issue number, with month/year in parentheses, and pagination. For online electronic documents, in addition to the full bibliographic citation, their entries will also provide the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) for online access to their full-text.

Finally, for easy detection of works by revisionist authors, the author of this Bibliography has decided to use boldface and 14-point font for the authors’ name or the titles at the beginning of their entries.
